5th V:NM Festival/Forum, 25–28 May 2005
performed digits
In 2005, the V:NM Festival focuses on the theme of performing electronic arts/music — ranging from links to performing arts, such as dance or drama, to the design of special music interfaces for digital sound generators or sound
processors.
The experimental and improvisational character of the performances will again be maintained by staying open to new artistic partnerships and forms. The Festival will be complemented by a symposium so that practice can be followed by
discourse.
In line with the Festival’s theme, there will be collaborations with the STEIM (STudio for Electro-Instrumental Music) in Amsterdam, who pioneered the development of “extremely physical interfaces”, and the Moscow-based Theremin Centre using the theremin technology specifically as an interface to the
digits.
Audio or video tracking allows for complex, dynamic interactions between analogue and digital processes and thus, are considered potential new technologies for live art
performances.
Performances are planned to be staged at the IEM (Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics), ESC and Stockwerk.
The exhibition of STEIM’s Electro Squeek Club
(see Annex) and the instrument collection of the Theremin Centre (various
theremins, terpsitone, rhythmicon) will be organised jointly with the Kunsthaus Graz / Medialab on their
premises.
Within the framework of collaboration with the STEIM and the Theremin Centre, two visiting composers are planned to be invited in co-operation with Werkstadt Graz and the IEM.
The symposium is organised jointly with the Institute of Musicology of the University of Graz and the IEM. It is planned to issue a theory monograph in the IEM’s series “Bemerkungen zur Elektronischen Musik”
(observations on electronic music).
